My flash head is dropping down

It might be that the rubber brake discs in the tilt head are consumed or greasy.
You can try to clean them with alcohol or use an anti-grease liquid that does not ruin the rubber.
If this does not help, please contact your local Elinchrom service center.

Modeling lamp not working

There might be a contact problem in the E27 socket.
Try to screw the lamp a bit further into the socket. Please use gloves for protection in case the bulb breaks. If this does not help, please contact your official Elinchrom service center.

Color temperature and consistency output

All flashes are extremely consistent in flash power output and may vary due to the glass flash tube by a 1/10th of an F-Stop or even less.
The color temperature is stable. The color shifts over 3 f-stop flash power regulation is about 200 – 300 Kelvin or even less, but when set to a certain flash power output each flash is consistent.
At minimum power, the flash color temperature tends to be warmer. At full power, it tends to be cooler, due to the voltage regulation of the capacitor for different flash power outputs.
This will not affect the image result, since studio lights are a mix of old and new units at different power levels with silver and white reflectors or Softboxes of different brands and fabrics.
The difference between a silver reflector and a softbox can show a gap in the color temperature, maybe 500 K or more.
The flash duration and specifications at full power you find in the user manuals.

Turning off sound issues

When turning off, the unit makes an electrical buzz or a zapping sound, ensure that all the main plugs and cables are earth grounded and that the main cable is well connected with the unit.
If this noise is not disappearing, it might be a faulty ON/OFF switch, which needs to be checked by an authorised elinchrom service.

Modeling lamp blow up

If a halogen modeling lamp blows up, make sure the main voltage is compatible with the bulb of your unit.
If you bought an Elinchrom unit from an international website, such as B&H or Amazon, you may have a US configuration. It could be the modeling lamps are 110V and the mains voltage in your country is 230V.
It could also be voltage spikes in the mains, which could be a reason for this unusual defect.
You should always purchase Elinchrom products in official dealer stores.

Control flash duration

You don’t have direct control over your flash duration.
The flash duration depends on your flash power settings.

Change ID unit number

It is not possible to change the flash unit ID numbers.
The ID number is unique to each product and currently unchangeable.
But you can give a custom name directly from the Elinchrom App / Software.

Continuous flash after power on the unit

Sometimes this effect can be forced by neon or energy saver lamps when they are too close to the unit and when the photocell is switched on.
  • Switch OFF the photocell and try again.
  • Switch OFF all the ambient lights.
  • Switch OFF the photocell and try again.

If the unit stops flashing continuously, it could be caused by the ambient lights.

If this doesn’t help, it is a defect. You need to contact your local Elinchrom service center for a check.

Impossible to go higher than 1/200s shutter speed

Hi-Sync or HSS mode is detected automatically with compatible units.
However, some cameras need a specific setup to be able to engage Hi-Sync or HSS:

How to setup hi-sync / hss mode.

  • Always check if you have the latest firmware installed.
  • If you use higher shutter speeds 1/400s and more, you should see a little “HS” symbol in the upper bar of the Transmitter Pro; this indicates that hi-sync is active.
  • Try different shutter speeds.
  • A decent grading over the image is unavoidable; this is the relation between camera chip size and the flash duration of the unit.
  • Try to use lower flash power settings. Hi-Sync requires a longer flash duration.
  • On the Transmitter  Pro, you find the ODS settings. Try to play with this setting to shift the exposure window to the best possible sync result.

Control flash duration

You don’t have direct control over your flash duration.
The flash duration depends on your flash power settings.

Transmitter not working

Check the following points:

  • Both devices must have the same frequency channel.
  • The transmitter and the unit must be set in the same Sync mode (Normal or Speed Mode).
  • Change the frequency channel on the flash unit and the transmitter and test again.
  • Is the battery of the Transmitter discharged?
  • Are the sync cables working properly?
  • Are the camera settings correct?
  • Is the unit used in bright ambient light, sun, or halogen lamp directed on the photocell (the photocell may block the synchro circuit on these classical units)?
  • Re-check the triggering in a darker room with a minimum of ambient light.
  • Check the Transmitter with another flash unit.
  • Avoid metal objects or walls between the flash units and the transmitter.
  • In case a flash tube is faulty, you can hear the click sound of the flash unit but no flash; this would indicate replacing the flash tube.

Dark slide on the picture

If a dark slide appears on your picture, this could be a sync issue when you use too short sync speeds with DSLR cameras.
You need to set the camera shutter speed at least at one value slower to maybe 1/200s or 1/160s.

ELB 1200

Old Elinchrom units compatibility with current accessories

We use the same Elinchrom mount since 1974, which means old units are still compatible with actual accessories.

The unit doesn’t fire or misfire

First, do the following:

  • Change the battery of the Transmitters
  • Change the Transmitters
If the problem remains, it could come from the flash tube or the keyboard itself.

Battery life tips

The following actions will help preserve battery life:

  • Verify that usage temperature of the battery averages an ambient temperature of –10°C to 45°C (14°F to 113°F). In lower or higher temperatures, the battery may not work properly and can sustain damage.
  • The optimal storage temperature is between 15° C and 25° C (59°F and 77°F).
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes as this may cause condensation and malfunction.
  • Do not leave your battery uncharged for more than one week.
  • Recharge your battery completely before putting it in storage, remove the battery from the unit and the fuse, which will deactivate the battery.
  • Recharge at least once every 3 months any stored battery.

Download the battery guide.

The battery pack won’t fire anymore

The flash tube could have cracked and you’ll perhaps need a replacement flash tube.

My flash head is dropping down

It might be that the rubber brake discs in the tilt head are consumed or greasy.
You can try to clean them with alcohol or use an anti-grease liquid that does not ruin the rubber.
If this does not help, please contact your local Elinchrom service center.

Using different heads simultaneously

There is no technical problem with mixing Action, Pro, HS, or other heads together with the Ranger / Quadra / ELB 400 / ELB 1200 battery unit.
However, the only problem is that you may expect strange results in your lighting.
The Action head has a very fast flash duration while the HS head has a very low flash duration.

How to setup Hi-Sync/HSS ?

Hi-Sync or HSS mode is detected automatically.
Enabling the Hi-Sync/HSS feature is very simple but different for each camera.
However, some cameras need a specific setup to be able to engage Hi-Sync or HSS.
How to setup hi-sync / hss mode.

Using 2 heads in Hi-Sync mode

Yes, but it is not recommended.
Using 2 HS heads in Hi-Sync mode on an ELB or Quadra pack is possible. But please note that this will drastically affect results if Hi-Sync is used since the flash duration is faster when 2 heads are plugged in.
For optimal results, we advise using only one head, use only output A if Hi-Sync matters.

Flashtube turned dark

A flashtube that turns dark at the electrodes after the first usage can happen after the first burn-in.
It depends on the type of electrodes that are used in specific flash tubes as the Quadra HS heads.
On some other types, you have a kind of white rests at the electrodes.

Flash counter

The value of the flash counter on a new unit could vary due to the factory quality control procedure.
To ensure proper and quality unit reliability, the components drive through a burn-in test which can be about 48 hours with an automated process. It is more a charge/discharge and on/off process to test and burn-in components. Factory controls are done without the flash tube.

HS and HSS in the same setup

Yes, TTL Elinchrom units integrated into an existing Elinchrom setup with Hi-Sync and HSS altogether work seamlessly.

Read more about this.

Elinchrom’s HSS compared with Elinchrom’s Hi-Sync

The ELB 400 with a Quadra HS head and the ELB 500 TTL with an ELB 500 head are so very similar from power output. Whether one is more powerful than the other now depends upon the individual camera.
HSS offers the advantage of less exposure banding and no gradient in the exposure than HS.

Elinchrom TTL units in a classic Elinchrom setup

Yes, you can use Elinchrom TTL units together with older Elinchrom flash units, but only in Manual mode, of course.

Using the ELB units on mains

The life span of the battery is not affected while using the battery packs on mains.
You can leave the charger connected, but if you shot with high flash power in short cycles, the battery will discharge even with the charger connected.
If you do not use full power flashes, the unit can take a breath after a series of flashes, and the unit will not overheat. Don’t place the unit in the sun or close to heating systems, and take care that there is air circulation, not using the unit in a bag or similar.

Ideal use and storage temperature

The ambient temperature whilst the unit is in use: min. -5°C (41°F) up to max. 35°C (95°F).
Storage temperature: -5°C (41°F) up to 60°C (140°F)
Optimal operating temperature: 0°C (32°F) up to 45°C (113°F).

How to reset the ELB pack to default settings?

Push the Left and Right buttons at the same time and hold for at least 1 second.
The unit will reboot and will clear all working parameters.
This will not reset the counter of the unit.

What unit is TTL compatible?

The Elinchrom ONE/THREE/FIVE, the ELB 500 TTL, and the ELC 125/500 are compatible with TTL along with the Transmitter Pro.

For more information, please check the compatibility chart.

What unit is HSS compatible?

Please check the compatibility chart to know what unit is HSS compatible.

Exchange a Quadra flashtube

You cannot replace the flashtube of a Quadra A head with a Quadra HS – flashtube.
The plugin triggers are different and the security cannot be guaranteed if you try to replace a flashtube with another one.

ELB 400 and old Quadra accessories

Compatibility with all previous Quadra batteries, cables, heads, and accessories is guaranteed.
Most of the Elinchrom range accessories are compatible using the Q-Reflector Adapter.

Flashtube turned dark

A flashtube that turns dark at the electrodes after the first usage can happen after the first burn-in.
It depends on the type of electrodes that are used in specific flash tubes as the Quadra HS heads.

ELB 500 head compared to Quadra heads

Other than the flashtube and electronics, the cable of the ELB 500 head is fixed and offers a more powerful and higher CRI LED.

The ELB 500 TTL compared to the ELB 400

The ELB 500 TTL offers 100 Ws more power, an easy-to-use and large interface, TTL, HSS, full asymmetry, and to do so, a completely new internal circuitry.
The ELB 500 TTL also offers only one type of head to shoot all kinds of various photography possible.

ELB 400/500 modelling lamp

Compared to the ELB 400, the ELB 500 TTL modeling lamp is a little more powerful and the CRI is much higher, making it significantly better for video use.

ELB 500 TTL

Battery pack refuses to work

This error could be forced by a deeply discharged Li-Ion battery.
Please never store a discharged Li-Ion battery, always recharge it at least every 3 months and remove the battery from the unit.
Deeply discharged Li-Ion batteries can be recovered when connected and charged with the ELB 400. The ELB 400 unit offers a recovery mode for Li-Ion batteries.

Download the battery guide.
Please contact your local Elinchrom service center.

What accessory is compatible with the Quadra head?

You can use almost any Elinchrom accessory with the Quadra Reflector Adapter MK-II:

Error P or PB

“P” stands for Power (flash power), “PB” stands for Lead Gel Battery attached.
The fuse may not be inserted into the battery. If not, the fuse may be damaged and need a replacement.
Please check the operating instructions, page 8 & 9:

Fuse replacement

Mains fuse

  • Before changing a blown fuse, switch OFF the unit and remove the mains cables.
  • Open the small drawer in the mains plug with a screwdriver and replace the fuse with the spare one located in its support case in this drawer.
  • Please, also make sure to check the correct rating of the fuse.

Modeling lamp fuse

  • Switch OFF the unit and replace the blown fuse with a new one, in the correct rating.
  • The fast blow fuse will protect the triac of the modeling lamp circuit, the lamp, and the flashtube.

Error 1

E1 indicates an overvoltage problem.
Switch the unit OFF, wait 2 minutes and switch the unit ON again.
If the error still appears, it needs to be checked out by your local Elinchrom service center.

The flash unit emits fume

If the unit hasn’t been used for a while it’s possible that it accumulated a bit of dust.
Before using it, we recommend leaving the unit ON with the modeling lamp for half a day.
This will allow the capacitors to reform themselves.

D-Lite unit stops to work

Heavy number of flashes in a short period of time usage may be over the limits for this kind of flash unit.
To protect from overheating, the unit stops working automatically. If you switch OFF the modeling lamp, the unit may make some more flashes before they overheat.
For heavy amount of flashes in a short period of time, we would suggest using the ELC Pro HD.

Battery inverters with Elinchrom units

Most Elinchrom distributors offer battery inverter solutions from different brands.
Please use only pure sine wave AC/DC battery inverter or patrol generators with flash units in general.
Non-sine wave inverters will damage the flash capacitors!
A 1200W pure sine wave battery or patrol inverter can operate approximately 2x 500Ws flash units, mainly in slow recycling mode (if this is selectable) and with reduced modeling lamp power, depending on which flash unit and which modeling lamp is used.
A few models that work with Elinchrom units;  LP800X Power Inverter (but probably discontinued) or the Innovatronix with their The Tronix Explorer XT3 or Tronix Explorer XT SE model.
Please check with your local Elinchrom distributor for more information.

The unit doesn’t fire or misfire

First, do the following:

  • Change the battery of the Transmitters
  • Change the Transmitters
If the problem remains, it could come from the flash tube or the keyboard itself.

Modeling lamp not working

There might be a contact problem in the E27 socket.
Try to screw the lamp a bit further into the socket. Please use gloves for protection in case the bulb breaks. If this does not help, please contact your official Elinchrom service center.

My flash head is dropping down

It might be that the rubber brake discs in the tilt head are consumed or greasy.
You can try to clean them with alcohol or use an anti-grease liquid that does not ruin the rubber.
If this does not help, please contact your local Elinchrom service center.

Error 6

E6 indicates a possible error in the charge circuit or mains supply.
This error message may pop up if you switch the unit ON/OFF too fast.
Please check all fuses and try powering it up again.
If the message comes back, return the unit to your local Elinchrom service center.

Dark slide on the picture

If a dark slide appears on your picture, this could be a sync issue when you use too short sync speeds with DSLR cameras.
You need to set the camera shutter speed at least at one value slower to maybe 1/200s or 1/160s.

Burning smell

The ELC Pro HD is trimmed for fast flash duration and recycling times.
Due to its high performance, the Xenon flash tube may extract ozone smell, which is normal for very fast flash units.

A display bug on the ELC Pro HD

There might be something hanging in the software.
Try to reset the unit. If this continues, the unit should be returned for a proper check at your dealer.

How to reset

  • Push the left and right buttons simultaneously and hold for at least 1 second.
  • The unit will reboot and will clear all working parameters.

This will not delete the “User Preset” data which is restored in the preset menu nor will it reset the counter in the “statistics” menu for “total lifetime,” “total flash amount” and “power.”

What is standby mode on the ELC Pro HD

The standby function is an energy-saving mode, which cuts off the capacitors from level charging.
The cooling will be active in case the unit has been heavily used.

The ELC Pro HD spare fuse

If you are looking for the spare fuse of the ELC Pro HD, there is one for the electronic and modeling lamp in the little drawer close to the mains plug.

How to change increment value of the ELC Pro HD?

These parameters cannot be changed.
Since the dial is so fast to adjust power up and down, we’ve only applied 1 F-stop steps for the left-right buttons.

Control flash duration

You don’t have direct control over your flash duration.
The flash duration depends on your flash power settings.

FAST recycle time when using power AC

There is no negative effect when you use the FAST mode with the ELC Pro HD connected to the mains.
Only if the mains fuses would blow you could set to default or slow charge mode. But this depends on the mains voltage, which can be relatively low in some countries.
In case you use a battery inverter, the unit may only work in default or slow charge mode, depending on how powerful the battery inverter is.
To drive one ELC Pro HD with a modeling lamp, you need a pure sine wave battery inverter of minimum 600W.

ELC Pro HD firmware update

ELC Pro HD and Hi-Sync

ELC Pro HD is not optimized for Hi-Sync.
Hi-Sync works particularly well with slower flash durations but the ELC Pro HD was built to have fast flash durations.
The ELC Pro HD 1000 will produce better results at full power than the ELC Pro HD 500.
On the display of the ELCs, you can see the flash durations for each power level, please pick up the lowest flash duration for better results.

ELC Pro HD power inconsistency

Due to a bug in the ELC Pro HD firmware (v.16), this may happen.
Please, update your unit to resolve this.

Error 3

E3 indicates an Auto Dump function fault.
The Unit has detected a time out in the ADF mode.
Switch the unit OFF, wait 2 minutes and switch the unit On again; use the Test release button for power reduction.
If the error shows up again, the unit requires a check-up by your local Elinchrom service center.

If the problem remains, it could come from the flash tube or the keyboard itself.

We use the same Elinchrom mount since 1974, which means old units are still compatible with actual accessories.

Grid

What is a Grid?

A Grid is meant to concentrate the light and offer a more or less focused light output.
Grids take the form of a metal or plastic insert that you put in flash reflectors.
Various models exist for different reflector sizes, they look very much like a honeycomb.
Learn more

Is a Deflector with a Beauty Dish and Grid intended to be used together?

It actually depends on the size of your Beauty Dish.
The use of a Deflector and a Grid is only possible on the 70cm Beauty Dish and not on a 44cm.

Grids for Softboxes

We have a complete range of grids for the Rotalux range, the Rotagrid.

Hi-Sync (HS)

How to trigger up to 1/8000s.

If you use a DSLR camera and want to trigger higher than 1/200s keep in mind that the final Sync Speed depends on the camera, camera electronics, mechanics, software, digital chip size, etc.
A faster synchronization is only possible with some mirrorless cameras that can sync up to 1/1000s or even shorter.
To go higher than the average speed of your DSLR camera (1/200s mostly), please look for the Transmitter Pro. The Hi-Sync or HSS feature allows you to go up to 1/8000s shutter speed.

Learn more about Hi-Sync and HSS technology.

Skyport system compatibility with cameras

All cameras respecting the standard sync triggering system will work.
The Hi-Sync/HSS/TTL features on the Transmitter Pro are only available for Nikon, Canon, Sony, and Fujifilm cameras (learn more).

Transmitter Pro and unit compatibility

A list of compatible cameras and flash units with the Transmitter Pro is available here.
www.elinchrom.com/support/compatibility/

Hi-Sync compatibility

Some units are compatible with Hi-Sync, others not.
Please check the compatibility page for more information.

What is HSS, Hi-Sync or HS?

HSS and Hi-Sync allow you to achieve high shutter speed.

  • Hi-Sync (HS) is an Elinchrom technology that is similar to HyperSync from PocketWizard but is much easier to use and produces better results.
  • High Speed Sync (HSS), on the other hand, in general, is a less powerful tool.
But, with ELB 500 TTL, ELC, and Elinchrom ONE/FIVE, we have been able to optimize HSS to the point that it is not dissimilar in power to Hi-Sync, thus making Elinchrom’s HSS the most powerful HSS from comparable powered units on the market to date.

More information about HS and HSS technologies.

What is ODS?

ODS means Over Drive Sync in Hi-Sync mode.
It enables to fine-tune the Transmitter Pro trigger signal to optimize exposure at high shutter speeds while gaining more light.
The ODS Setup offers adjustment from 0.1 to 5.0 ms or can be switched off.
The ODS value will vary depending on the camera and the flash unit used, and must be adjusted manually.

Is the Quadra HS head compatible with a Quadra unit?

Yes, it is 100% compatible.
The Quadra HS head is compatible with the ELB 400 and all previous generations of Quadra packs.

Using strobo mode with an HS Head

We don’t recommend using the strobo feature when using an HS head.

Speed Mode and Transmitter Pro

If you apply sync mode settings (ELSP) to the Transmitter, you need to apply the same settings to the flash unit (same as changes in the frequency channel or group settings).
We recommend using the unit and transmitter always in Normal Sync mode, you gain maximum distance range and only use the HS function for faster shutter speeds, up to 1/8000s.

Gradient, banding and clipping

Gradient refers to the homogeneity of the picture when shooting above the X-sync.
Gear optimized for Hi-Sync, such as the Quadra HS head, limits this gradient effect.
With gear compatible with HSS, this gradient effect doesn’t exist.

Clipping and banding are the same.
Banding is the black band on the picture that occurs without Hi-Sync or HSS technology.
The light out of flash is not synchronized correctly to shutter speed and creates that black band.

HS and HSS in the same setup

Yes, TTL Elinchrom units integrated into an existing Elinchrom setup with Hi-Sync and HSS altogether work seamlessly.

Read more about this.

Can the ELB 500 TTL achieve Hi-Sync?

Hi-Sync is not available with the ELB 500 TTL. HSS will be enabled automatically with compatible cameras.

Enable HS or HSS on Sony cameras

Here are some steps to follow to sort this out:

  • Do not use silent mode, this may deactivate some flash features.
  • Activate in the flash mode setting of the camera fill-in flash or slow Sync.
  • SC Setup by the camera is normal because some Sony cameras can be controlled by the Transmitter.
  • HS mode is automatically activated with the Transmitter Pro version since firmware V.2.10.
  • Hi-Sync and other functions will work only when you use original Sony lenses.
Workaround: use Sony with the original lens with the Transmitter switched ON and then change to a third-party lens without switching of the devices.

HS or HSS on Fujifilm cameras

Hi-Sync/HSS mode for Fujifilm has to be set up in the camera settings.
Set your Fujifilm camera to the Auto FP (HSS) flash mode in the custom settings menu.
The Transmitter Pro will automatically engage the HS/HSS mode when you raise the shutter speed above the normal flash sync speed.

To set the camera to the Auto FP flash mode, go to:

  • Settings Menu
  • Flash Setting
  • Flash Function Setting
  • Select SYNC mode

Leave the cameras in this custom flash mode all the time.
Note: Do not use silent mode (MS/ES mode), this may deactivate some flash features.

What unit is HSS compatible?

Please check the compatibility chart to know what unit is HSS compatible.

Are TTL and HSS available on the ELC Pro HD?

No, TTL and HSS are not available for the ELC Pro HD.
Please refer to the ELC 125 / ELC 500 if TTL and HSS maters.

I don’t see my camera as HSS / TTL compatible.

If your camera is not listed as compatible, it simply means that it has not yet been tested with all possible features.
Don’t worry, you can test it, it will not have any negative effect on the camera.

HSS

Nikon Z9 and HSS not working correctly

Like other flash brands, several users have reported sync issues using the Nikon Z9 with the Transmitter Pro while HSS is enabled.
We are currently investigating these problems.

Can the ONE/THREE achieve Hi-Sync?

Hi-Sync is not available with the ONE/THREE.
HSS will be enabled automatically with the Transmitter Pro and compatible cameras.
Note: Elinchrom units integrated into an existing Elinchrom setup with Hi-Sync and HSS units altogether work seamlessly.

Can the ONE/THREE achieve HSS (High Speed Sync)?

Yes, the ONE/THREE can enable HSS and TTL with the Transmitter Pro.

With gear compatible with HSS, this gradient effect doesn’t exist.

Clipping and banding are the same.
Banding is the black band on the picture that occurs without Hi-Sync or HSS technology.
The light out of flash is not synchronized correctly to shutter speed and creates that black band.

HS and HSS in the same setup

Yes, TTL Elinchrom units integrated into an existing Elinchrom setup with Hi-Sync and HSS altogether work seamlessly.

Read more about this.

Why HSS on Elinchrom products?

Previously, we only introduced products with Hi-Sync as HSS had a substantial disadvantage of power.
With the ELB 500 TTL, we have been able to optimize HSS to the point that it is not dissimilar in power to Hi-Sync, thus making Elinchrom’s HSS the most powerful HSS from comparable powered units on the market to date.

Can the ELB 500 TTL achieve Hi-Sync?

Hi-Sync is not available with the ELB 500 TTL. HSS will be enabled automatically with compatible cameras.

What unit is HSS compatible?

Please check the compatibility chart to know what unit is HSS compatible.

Are TTL and HSS available for the ELC 125/500?

Yes, TTL and HSS features are implemented in the ELC 125 and the ELC 500.

Quadra

Ranger Quadra with Li-Ion batteries

If you want to use a new li-Ion battery with an old Ranger Quadra pack you can, but this depends on when the battery pack was manufactured.

Please check out your serial number.
All packs with serial numbers beyond 4001 are compatible with Li-ion batteries, without any modification.
All serial numbers below 4001 are not compatible and require a modification of the flash lamp.
For compatible Quadra Heads, please download the PDF manual.

Quadra troubleshooting (P1.0, P2.0, etc.)

If you get P1.0, P2.0. P3.0, P4.0, or P5.0, please try a master reset as described in the manual.
Press together “up + down” and turn on the unit

What accessory is compatible with the Quadra head?

You can use almost any Elinchrom accessory with the Quadra Reflector Adapter MK-II:
Read more about light shapers for the ELB 400 / 500

Using different heads simultaneously

There is no technical problem with mixing Action, Pro, HS, or other heads together with the Ranger / Quadra / ELB 400 / ELB 1200 battery unit.
However, the only problem is that you may expect strange results in your lighting.
The Action head has a very fast flash duration while the HS head has a very low flash duration.

My flash head is dropping down

It might be that the rubber brake discs in the tilt head are consumed or greasy.
You can try to clean them with alcohol or use an anti-grease liquid that does not ruin the rubber.
If this does not help, please contact your local Elinchrom service center.

The battery pack won’t fire anymore

The flash tube could have cracked and you’ll perhaps need a replacement flash tube.

Quadra Head spare parts

You cannot replace Quadra Head parts by yourself, you’ll need to bring your heads to a repair store.

Dark slide on the picture

If a dark slide appears on your picture, this could be a sync issue when you use too short sync speeds with DSLR cameras.
You need to set the camera shutter speed at least at one value slower to maybe 1/200s or 1/160s.

Read more about flash sync.

Quadra / ELB 400 shutting down

Make sure you insert the security fuse on the top side of the battery pack.
Please check the operating instructions, page 8 & 9.

Error P or PB

“P” stands for Power (flash power), “PB” stands for Lead Gel Battery attached.
The fuse may not be inserted into the battery. If not, the fuse may be damaged and need a replacement.
Please check the operating instructions, page 8 & 9:

Fast to slow recycle time

This is a normal effect to prevent the unit from heating too much.

Lead Gel battery capacity loss

The loss of Lead Gel batteries is similar to Li-Ion: 30% within one year.
The main difference is the lower amount of flashes out of one charged battery:

  • Lead Gel: fast and slow charge at max power yields approx. 110-140 flashes.
  • Li-Ion: fast and slow charge at max power yields approx. 280-320 flashes.

Modeling light dimming control

Unfortunately, the LED modeling lamp of the Quadra/ELB 400 is not dimmable, therefore,  you cannot control its intensity.

Using the ELB 400 while charging

It is absolutely safe to use the ELB 400 or Quadra while charging.

Using a Lead Gel battery with an ELB 400

The Lead Gel battery can be used with an ELB 400 without any damage to the unit, it’s just a loss of performance.

Please note:
  • The ELB 400 battery status display will not work correctly with Lead Gel batteries.
  • The ELB 400 will switch to ECO (slow) mode due to the lower voltage of the Lead Gel battery.
  • The recycling time will increase and the number of flashes will be reduced.
  • The ELB 400 will switch off earlier, maybe already at 50% of the charge due to the lower voltage.

What are the 3 different Quadra heads?

  • The Quadra HS head was designed for optimal performance for Hi-Sync.
  • The Quadra Action (or A) is too fast for the highest shutter speeds which might result in disappointing results. Lowering the shutter speed will produce better results.
  • The Quadra Pro (or S) head is usable up to higher shutter speeds.

Learn more about the 3 Quadra heads

Is your gear compatible with Hi-Sync?

Is the Quadra HS head compatible with a Quadra unit?

Yes, it is 100% compatible.
The Quadra HS head is compatible with the ELB 400 and all previous generations of Quadra packs.

Change ID unit number

It is not possible to change the flash unit ID numbers.
The ID number is unique to each product and currently unchangeable.
But you can give a custom name directly from the Elinchrom App / Software.

The ELB 400 doesn’t match the specs

The ELB 400 can only charge faster when used with the latest Li-Ion battery (59 Wh, 14.4 V) Code number: 19295.
The Lead Gel Battery offers only 12 V, which slows down the ELB 400. However, with the dedicated Li-Ion battery, it will match the specifications.

Li-Ion battery with Quadra unit

You can use a Li-Ion battery with an old ranger Quadra pack, but the display will show the wrong battery and power levels.
However, the real charge level can be checked on the battery directly.
Please note, it’s important to know that the flash heads probably need to be updated.

What is the S Quadra head?

The “S” Quadra head is the old version of the actual “Pro” head.
Both heads are exactly the same but under a different name.
The previous Quadra heads were named “S” for Standard and “A” for Action.
Now we have 3 Quadra heads; The Pro (S), Action (A), and HS.

Exchange a Quadra flashtube

You cannot replace the flashtube of a Quadra A head with a Quadra HS – flashtube.
The plugin triggers are different and the security cannot be guaranteed if you try to replace a flashtube with another one.

On some other types, you have a kind of white rests at the electrodes.

Continuous light for unlimited time

You can set the modeling LED lamp to continuous light.
Please press the modeling lamp button for 2 seconds, and the lamp will be on for an unlimited time.
To switch OFF the modeling LED lamp, press the button again.

Battery recovery mode is in a permanent loop

ELB 400/500 modelling lamp

Compared to the ELB 400, the ELB 500 TTL modeling lamp is a little more powerful and the CRI is much higher, making it significantly better for video use.

Receiver Plus

What are the differences between all the Elinchrom remotes?

You’ll find three types of remotes inside our range; two transmitters and one receiver.

  • The Transmitter Plus is a universal transmitter compatible with most brands and cameras with a classic hot-shoe.
  • The Transmitter Pro is a transmitter offering a display and additional functions such as HSS or TTL but is only compatible with brands, cameras, and units listed on this page.
  • The Receiver Plus is a receiver for older Elinchrom units without a build-in receiver or other flash brand units and Speedlights.

  • To set flash units into different groups, see the flash unit manual.
  • All means that all-flash units will fire or increase or decrease flash power with the -/+ buttons.

Mode Button

  • If the lights on the Receiver show up in green, you are in the right sync mode, which we call Normal Sync Mode.
  • By pressing 2 sec. on the mode button, you can change into another sync mode. The light shows up in red, which only works with digital large-format cameras to sync speed above the normal x-sync, up to about a 1/1600s with a Phase One camera.
  • If this setting is used, also the flash unit needs to be configured in the correct sync mode, otherwise no communication.
  • We suggest not using this feature since it does not bring any advantage with DSLR cameras and reduces the distance range by 50%.

How can I replace the ONE/THREE’s internal battery?

The battery can be quickly replaced by any certified Elinchrom service center.

Flashtube replacement

Most Elinchrom flash heads have plug-in flashtubes, making it easy to change flashtube yourself.

  1. Switch the unit OFF
  2. Remove the mains cable
  3. Take the unit from its stand and lay it horizontally on a rigid surface.
It will need to be held firmly whilst removing and replacing the flashtube.
  4. Allow the flashtube and modeling lamp to cool down and wait for the unit to discharge for 30 minutes.
  5. Carefully remove and store the modeling lamp. They can be very hot.
  6. Pull the flashtube firmly out of the terminals.
If the tube is broken, use security gloves to avoid cutting yourself and use an insulated tool to pull out the electrodes.
  7. Never touch the metal electrodes and ensure that the unit has been disconnected from the mains for 30 minutes.
  8. Take the new flashtube.
Insulated tissues or security gloves MUST BE USED.
Any contact with your fingers on the tube can cause dark markings on the tube when used.
  9. Check that the tube is correctly aligned (central) and that the trigger contact is gripping the tube.
  10. Re-connect and test the unit as usual.
Always use a protective glove to remove the flashtube.

Elinchrom spare parts

If you need spare parts, you have to contact an official Elinchrom service center in your country.

Can I control the ONE/THREE via smartphone or computer?

Yes. You can control the ONE/THREE with the Elinchrom Studio Software and/or the iOS App.

Change ID unit number

It is not possible to change the flash unit ID numbers.
The ID number is unique to each product and currently unchangeable.
But you can give a custom name directly from the Elinchrom App / Software.

Technical

Quadra troubleshooting (P1.0, P2.0, etc.)

If you get P1.0, P2.0. P3.0, P4.0, or P5.0, please try a master reset as described in the manual.
Press together “up + down” and turn on the unit

Using different heads simultaneously

There is no technical problem with mixing Action, Pro, HS, or other heads together with the Ranger / Quadra / ELB 400 / ELB 1200 battery unit.
However, the only problem is that you may expect strange results in your lighting.
The Action head has a very fast flash duration while the HS head has a very low flash duration.

How to change increment value of the ELC Pro HD?

These parameters cannot be changed.
Since the dial is so fast to adjust power up and down, we’ve only applied 1 F-stop steps for the left-right buttons.

Kelvin temperature on old Elinchrom units

The colour temperature on the old Elinchrom units was set at approximately 5500 Kelvin.
However, since the units and the flashtubes are aging, the colour temperature might be at 5200 Kelvin or less. Normally after some years of use, the flashtube tends to give a warmer colour.

How to reduce light power?

There are several options to reduce light power in order to obtain a narrow depth of field.
  • Set your camera to a lower ISO. Setting 50 ISO or even less if required.
  • Use grey filters for your lenses to reduce light.
  • Softboxes may reduce the light output.
  • Use Hi-Sync or HSS with the Transmitter Pro.

Battery LED indicator stays on

If the Ranger RX Battery LED indicator stays on at 10%, this might be a problem with the keyboard, or it could be a faulty contact.
If the LED does not switch off after a few minutes, the unit should be checked by an Elinchrom repair service.

Modeling light dimming control

Unfortunately, the LED modeling lamp of the Quadra/ELB 400 is not dimmable, therefore,  you cannot control its intensity.

ELC Pro HD flash before ready

When the unit is OFF, press and hold ON + knob button (S) until the message “ENABLED” is shown.
To return to “DISABLED” repeat the procedure.
The shown value is automatically saved as the standard setting for the unit.
Please note: this feature is only available since firmware 26.17

Ideal use and storage temperature

The ambient temperature whilst the unit is in use: min. -5°C (41°F) up to max. 35°C (95°F).
Storage temperature: -5°C (41°F) up to 60°C (140°F)
Optimal operating temperature: 0°C (32°F) up to 45°C (113°F).

ELC vs ELC Pro HD

The ELC Pro HD is Elinchrom’s top-of-the-range compact unit.
The ELC Pro HD offers a more powerful halogen modelling lamp, faster recycling times and is available with more power if necessary but cannot achieve TTL and HSS.
The ELC 125/500 on the other hand offers TTL, HSS, and an LED modelling lamp.

Transmitter Plus

What are the differences between all the Elinchrom remotes?

You’ll find three types of remotes inside our range; two transmitters and one receiver.

  • The Transmitter Plus is a universal transmitter compatible with most brands and cameras with a classic hot-shoe.
  • The Transmitter Pro is a transmitter offering a display and additional functions such as HSS or TTL but is only compatible with brands, cameras, and units listed on this page.
  • The Receiver Plus is a receiver for older Elinchrom units without a build-in receiver or other flash brand units and Speedlights.

Learn more about Elinchrom remotes.

Elinchrom units and other flash brands

To trigger a Speedlight or any other flash brand unit with your Elinchrom units, you need the Elinchrom Receiver Plus.

Skyport system compatibility with cameras

All cameras respecting the standard sync triggering system will work.
The Hi-Sync/HSS/TTL features on the Transmitter Pro are only available for Nikon, Canon, Sony, and Fujifilm cameras (learn more).

Change power from the Transmitter is not working

Please make sure your Elinchrom unit and Transmitter are both updated with the latest firmware.
www.elinchrom.com/support/firmware

Transmitter distance range

The distance range of the Transmitter Plus or Pro is 200 m (656 feet) outdoors and 60 m (196 feet) indoors.

If the distance is limited, then please try the following:

  • Reposition the units.
  • Increase the distance from walls and ceilings.
  • ELSP Mode:
In speed sync mode the distance range is reduced by approximately 50%, switch back to Normal sync mode.
  • Outdoors, the distance range could be reduced due to humidity, interference, obstacles, etc.

Transmitter triggering problems

Please verify the following points:

  • Transmitter and receiver must have the same frequency channel settings.
  • Transmitter and receiver must have the same synchronization mode settings: Normal or Speed sync mode (ELSP MODE on the Transmitter Pro).
  • Check that the EL-Skyport receiver in all EL units with built-in receivers is switched ON.
  • Try another frequency channel for both transmitter and the receiver of the Elinchrom unit.

ELSP mode

The Skyport Transmitter system has 2 operating modes that offer different shooting functionalities.

NORMAL Sync Mode
Green LED – 200 m (656’) working range – Synchro is limited to X-Sync.

SPEED Sync Mode
Red LED – 100 m (328’) working range – Synchro is limited to X-Sync but enables faster shutter speeds only on digital medium format cameras.

To use shutter speeds of up to 1/8000s, the HS / Hi-Sync mode must be activated on the Transmitter Pro when used in both Normal and Speed mode.

Read more about the ELSP mode.

The Transmitter does not recognize the unit

Activate the EL-Skyport receiver in your unit.
  1. Switch on the EL-Skyport receiver in the unit.
  2. Set Group and Frequency Channel to 1.
  3. Set the Sync Mode of the unit to Normal (on the Transmitter Pro, under the ELSP feature; the backlit display should appear green).

Transmitter SR port connector

The SR port of the Transmitters is a 2.5 mm Flash Sync output socket.
This port can be used to connect and trigger directly a flash unit or a flash trigger with a sync cable.
The devices must offer a flash sync input socket to enable a direct cable connection.

Transmitters and modelling lamp control

Control of the modeling lamp is possible with the Transmitter Pro only and/or the Elinchrom App/Software.
It is not possible to control the modeling lamp with the Transmitter Plus.

Transmitter Plus manual

A complete manual for the Transmitter Plus does not exist.
You can find additional information here.

Group Button

  • Select the groups in which you have placed flash units in Group 1, 2, 3, 4 to control them separately.
  • To set flash units into different groups, see the flash unit manual.
  • All means that all-flash units will fire or increase or decrease flash power with the -/+ buttons.

Mode Button

  • If the lights on the transmitter show up in green, you are in the right sync mode, which we call Normal Sync Mode.

Learn more about Normal and Speed mode.

CH Button

This button allows using other frequencies in case there is interference with other wireless networks.
The frequency settings must also be changed on the flash unit, otherwise no communication.

Transmitter Pro

Nikon Z9 and HSS not working correctly

Like other flash brands, several users have reported sync issues using the Nikon Z9 with the Transmitter Pro while HSS is enabled.
We are currently investigating these problems.

Read more about flash sync.

Elinchrom units and other flash brands

To trigger a Speedlight or any other flash brand unit with your Elinchrom units, you need the Elinchrom Receiver Plus.

What is ODS?

ODS means Over Drive Sync in Hi-Sync mode.
It enables to fine-tune the Transmitter Pro trigger signal to optimize exposure at high shutter speeds while gaining more light.
The ODS Setup offers adjustment from 0.1 to 5.0 ms or can be switched off.
The ODS value will vary depending on the camera and the flash unit used, and must be adjusted manually.

Elinchrom and Phottix (Odin II)

Odin II is one of the two remote options in the ELB 500 TTL settings menu.
When this remote option is enabled, the ELB 500 TTL is compatible with Phottix Odin II transmitters and Phottix products with built-in Odin II or with Phottix Odin II receivers.
Only available for Canon and Nikon.

Hi-Sync compatibility

Some units are compatible with Hi-Sync, others not.
Please check the compatibility page for more information.

  • Check that the EL-Skyport receiver in all EL units with built-in receivers is switched ON.
  • Try another frequency channel for both transmitter and the receiver of the Elinchrom unit.
  • Reduce the distance between the flash unit and transmitter.
  • Check the hotshoe fitting.
  • Check the camera settings (turn hotshoe communication on).
  • Check that the Transmitter Pro version corresponds to your Canon, Nikon, Sony, or Fujifilm camera.
  • Check the list of compatible cameras.

Learn more about Speed and Normal sync mode.

Change power from the Transmitter is not working

Please make sure your Elinchrom unit and Transmitter are both updated with the latest firmware.

Use a Transmitter Pro for Canon on a Nikon camera and reverse

Yes, you can use it but in manual mode only.
Only the hot-shoe middle contact is available to trigger Elinchrom flash units.
You can use a Canon Transmitter Pro on a Nikon camera or a Nikon Transmitter Pro on a Canon in manual mode.
You can still control power and see the unit displayed on the Transmitter.
Keep in mind HS, HSS and ODS features are not available and will not have any effect.

Transmitter Pro display in the dark

The Transmitter Pro’s display is backlit and can be used in dark environments.

Unit is not displayed on the Transmitter Pro

Units equipped with a plug-in Transceiver RX are limited in remote features.
These units can however be triggered and controlled (but with no visual feedback) by the Transmitter Pro.
For more information about compatibility, please check this page.

Speed Mode is not working with the Transmitter Pro

If your unit is in Speed Mode (ELSP), your Transmitter also needs to be set to Speed Mode, or the Transmitter will not display the units.

Using strobo mode with an HS Head

We don’t recommend using the strobo feature when using an HS head.

What is Auto Mod?

In the Auto Mod setting, you can decide to activate the modeling lamp to help you focus on your subject.

2 options are available:

  • Shutter; When you press the shutter of your camera, the modeling lamp turns on. This feature is only available on Canon.
  • DOF; When you press the DOF button of your camera, the modeling lamp turns on.

Blue and green light

The blue light in the back of the Transmitter Pro is the TTL communication with the camera.
The green light in the front of the Transmitter Pro is the EL-Skyport communication between the transmitter and the Elinchrom flash unit.

No AF assist light

AF assist works only in very dark environments, and some camera models may not support this feature.

Transmitter Pro for other brands

Supported cameras are Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fujifilm, and Pentax.

Transmitter Pro and Skyport Plus HS? What is the difference?

There is no difference; both names refer to the same product.
Skyport Plus HS is the Transmitter Pro‘s previous name and is no longer used.
Starting from firmware 2.1, bringing TTL compatibility with compatible units, the Skyport Plus HS became Transmitter Pro.

Firmware release notes

AF assist light not calibrated

Please keep in mind that the AF light red dots are designed based on 2 meters distance to be centered.
If your subject is too close to your camera and Transmitter, the AF light red dots may be too high.

What unit is TTL compatible?

The Elinchrom ONE/THREE/FIVE, the ELB 500 TTL, and the ELC 125/500 are compatible with TTL along with the Transmitter Pro.

For more information, please check the compatibility chart.

Switch from TTL to manual

TTL is only here to help you if needed.
If you don’t want TTL, you can just as easily use it in Manual mode.
You can start in TTL, lock exposure, and then switch to manual, we call this Manual Lock.

Why TTL on Elinchrom products?

We are in a world where we need to work faster with an efficient workflow.
This is why we introduced TTL within our portfolio of products.

Elinchrom TTL units in a classic Elinchrom setup

Yes, you can use Elinchrom TTL units together with older Elinchrom flash units, but only in Manual mode, of course.

TTL and non TTL units in the same setup

Using TTL and non TTL units together is possible, but only when both are used in Manual.
This is because, in TTL mode, the camera controls the pre-flash and main flash synchronization of TTL. It is, however, possible to experiment with slower shutter synchronization speeds to achieve acceptable synchronization of manual with TTL.

What unit is TTL compatible?

The Elinchrom ONE/THREE/FIVE, the ELB 500 TTL, and the ELC 125/500 are compatible with TTL along with the Transmitter Pro.

For more information, please check the compatibility chart.

I don’t see my camera as HSS / TTL compatible.

If your camera is not listed as compatible, it simply means that it has not yet been tested with all possible features.
Don’t worry, you can test it, it will not have any negative effect on the camera.

Are TTL and HSS available on the ELC Pro HD?

No, TTL and HSS are not available for the ELC Pro HD.
Please refer to the ELC 125 / ELC 500 if TTL and HSS maters.

Are TTL and HSS available for the ELC 125/500?

Yes, TTL and HSS features are implemented in the ELC 125 and the ELC 500.
