    Capture Natural Beauty

with Felix Kunze and the ELB 400

Renowned lifestyle and portrait photographer Felix Kunze discusses his incredible Icelandic wilderness adventure.

Read on to find out why the ELB 400 and Sekonic Litemaster Pro for Elinchrom make perfect travel companions.

    The Spot

I went to Iceland in September 2016 and connected again with an old Icelandic friend. Having visited the usual tourist hot spots on this trip, I immediately accepted her invitation to participate in a 5 day wilderness adventure to a seldom-trodden trail in the interior of Iceland.

    The Hike

44 miles circumambulating the remote Langisjór glacial lake, was accessible only with a 6 hour drive in a 4x4. Our group of 20 was made up of all sorts of Icelanders and I picked one of them to photograph at the very end of our hike.

The beautiful Briet, who looked remarkable after 4 nights sleeping in a tent, on moss. We found a spot that showed some of the glacial run-off and the majesty of the area. In the distance you can just about make-out the outlines of the Vatnajökull Glacier, one of Europe’s largest ice sheets.

"I wanted to convey how light the ELB 400 really is."

    The Light

I wanted to convey how light the ELB 400 battery pack really is. Coupled with a small Rotalux Deep Octa Sofbox, a straw colored color correction gel, I used a superclamp to attach the light to a hiking pole and asked one of my new friends to hold the light. I used my trusty Nikon D810 with 24-70mm lens.

    The Light Meter

The key to making a shot like this work is to subtly add light and definition.

Using the Sekonic L-478DR-U-EL Litemaster Pro enabled me to get the exact mix of ambient and artificial light, resulting in a well-lit image that still looks totally natural.

I’ve been searching for years for the perfect location lighting kit. The ELB 400, Action Head, Rotalux and Sekonic Meter combination have been the answer to my prayers.
